My artwork consists of a depiction of the opposing dualities embedded in our cities. I am concerned with showing the ambivalence of being simultaneously attracted and repulsed by a physical space or a social phenomenon, or being scared and at the same time fascinated by it.

My work is developed in different two-dimensional media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking and photography. I am interested in exploring the characteristics of the process particular to each medium. The method by which the work is produced offers me a parallel way for understanding it. The undertaking of the work is always related to the image depicted. Together they conform the message that I want to bring across.

My subject matter is always connected to my personal experience. Since 2008, I’ve been living in a city of little less than 200,000 inhabitants in the North of the Netherlands. The contrast between this city called Groningen and Mexico City (the place which I call home and yet I don’t know in most of its extension) is clearly huge. However, before I came here, I never imagined that urban infrastructure could affect my everyday habits to the extent to which it did with me. As a consequence, I became much more sensible to issues concerning urban planning, and the subject matter of my art production was pointed at questioning the way our cities are being built, restructured and adapted.

Although my work departs from my personal experience, it is only concerned with aspects of my life through which I can relate to society. My work is therefore not about my position as an individual, but about my role in a world where people with different interests are struggling to make a living.

MAPPING THE CHEWING GUM

by Julio Pastor

I recently found these paving stones as I was exiting the train station of Groningen. What makes them special is the fact that they are covered in chewing gum spots that increase in density, as they get closer to the drain in the centre...

THE THREAD

by Taf Hassam and Mark Kremer

“All Cretans are liars”: said the Cretan.
It seems quite befitting to use this ancient paradox in relation to the trip and knowingly impossible attempts made by Julio Pastor. One could even reword the paradox as:
“This representation is the truth”: said the representation...
